Meeting Summary June 11, 2026

Attending: Hultgren, Waldburger, Thorne, Clark

The meeting began shortly after 7:00 pm in the lobby of the Transportation Center in Downtown Storrs.

The recently completed 4th grade bike education program was discussed with some ideas for improvement in 2027 – including – some equipment that should be on hand (extra kickstands, rear derailleur hangers, wind-proof storage boxes/containers for the front table items, additional white board markers, a better setup for the trash bag, etc.). Also the need for another way to illustrate the people, vehicles, bushes & animals on the traffic boards (perhaps with stickers or other quasi-permanent but storable representations) was brought up. Hultgren said the bikes with broken kickstands and shifting problems were being fixed by Storrs Center Cycle and would be replaced in the trailer soon. The broken kickstands were going to be fixed by Gosselin if indeed they can be repaired. Finally, prior to 2027’s program volunteers who help with the off-bike teaching will be given strategies for keeping the students’ attention.

Hultgren reminded everyone that the deadline for the Town to file the Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) renewal application with the League of American Bicyclists was next week (June 17th), and he was working with the Assistant Town Engineer and Town Communications Director to get the final information into the application.

Another Cycling Without Age (CWA) pilot training session was scheduled for Saturday morning July 18th. People who signed up with interest in being pilots at the Fall 2025 Mansfield Celebration will be notified of this session (9 to 10:30 introduction and description of the CWA program/trishaw; 10:30 to 12:00 training rides on the trishaw). The website will also be checked to see if the button to express interest in the CWA program is on and functioning.

Some Bike Mansfield website updates are needed, particularly since it may be viewed as part of the Town’s BFC renewal. In addition to updating the 2026 events, a merchandise link or QR code needs to be added for purchasing clothing with the Bike Mansfield logo on it. Ditto for the Bike Mansfield Facebook page!

England and Thorne said they can assist Hultgren in canvassing business members for 2026 renewals.

Waldburger asked that the TCC announcement for the Quiet Corner Bike tour (July 26th) be sent out to the Bike Mansfield email list.

The meeting was concluded at approximately 7:40 pm.
