Mansfield’s Bicycle Education Program for 4th Graders: A Community Initiative for Sustainable Mobility and Safety

In the Spring of 2024, the Mansfield Elementary School initiated a comprehensive bicycle education program for all its 4th-grade students. Funded by generous community contributions and a specialized grant from SustainableCT, this program equips around 100 students each year with essential life skills for safe bicycling. Each participant also receives a bicycle helmet. The program has run during the week after Memorial Day in 2025 and 2026 as well.

The Inspiration and Framework

Drawing inspiration from the highly successful bike education program in South Windsor schools, BikeWalkCT has tailored a specialized training curriculum and manual for Physical Education teachers across Connecticut. Mansfield PE instructors received this resourceful training and have been delivering an engaging and educational experience for the students each year.

Program Structure

The program combines classroom instruction with on-the-bike riding sessions, using a fleet of bikes stored in a 16-foot trailer and reused year after year.

The program stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together to prioritize sustainable mobility and safety for its younger generation. We have been excited to see this program come to life and continue to provide a long-lasting impact on our students.
