Bike Friendly Application in the Home Stretch

In 2012, Lon Hultgren, then the Mansfield Town Engineer, made the first attempt to apply for a Bicycle Friendly Community designation from The League for American Cyclists. While that application was not successful, the feedback gave Lon the blueprint needed for a second attempt. And, here we are, ready to submit another application on August 17, 2017, with the enthusiastic support of local cyclists, a bicycle advocacy group, the various town officials, staff and committees and a wide range of regional stakeholders.

Lon has changed (now “retired”), Mansfield has changed (a spectacular new downtown has emerged), and cycling awareness has been transformed by a non-profit advocacy group, our very own Bike Mansfield. The town council has adopted a Complete Streets policy and will soon finalize the active transportation elements in the Master Plan.

Fingers crossed, in short order we will also be able to call ourselves an official Bicycle Friendly Community. Thanks to everyone involved in this important community effort.
